The internship curriculum at VA Hines Hospital has provided interns with academic excellence in a clinical setting for over 60 years. The first class of dietetic interns to graduate from Hines VA Hospital was in 1944. In addition to the core competencies required in the curriculum of all practice programs, Hines offers a general emphasis area as well as a Nutrition Therapy emphasis area. Our program prepares entry-level dietitians through an integrated approach that reinforces and builds upon the required Dietetics academic preparation. The Hines Dietetic Internship Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education of the American Dietetic Association (ADA), 120 S. Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL 60606-6995, 800-877-1600 ext 5400. Graduates are eligible to take the Registration Examination to become Registered Dietitians with the Commission on Dietetics Registration (CDR) of the ADA and to become active members in the Association.

Ten interns will be admitted to the program this year. The internship academic calendar begins in August and concludes in May. During the 40-week program, interns progress through various clinical, administrative, and community nutrition unit rotations. Unit rotations build upon one another and are designed to develop an appreciation for the interrelationship between foodservice and clinical nutrition. There is one week of vacation scheduled at the end of December, and National Holidays are observed except when they conflict with UIC classes. A schedule of unit rotations will be provided to interns during their orientation period.

Each intern receives a stipend of approximately $1,210 (gross) per month for 39 weeks out of the 40 weeks of the internship. Social security and income tax withholding will vary by intern. The amount of the stipend is subject to change at the beginning of each fiscal year, October 1.
